Jaejoong woke up to the sound of knocking on the door. He tiredly rubbed his eyes and sat up, his lower back sore from the previous night’s activities. He sighed and glanced at Yunho, who was snoring softly.
He nudged the other man awake, “Yunho, I think we have to leave now.”
“Dojin said we could have the room for as long as we wanted.” Yunho muttered, refusing to open his eyes, “Ignore the knocking –“
The door opened, and Dojin strolled in. Jaejoong quickly pulled the covers around his body, and Yunho groaned with annoyance but sat up. He looked at Dojin irritably and ran his hand through his hair, “What?”
“As nice as it is for you to enjoy the room, you both have to get out now.” Dojin said indifferently as he eyed Jaejoong in amusement, “Sources have told me that the Kims are having a family gathering in an hour or so, and Changmin came around looking for you Yunho.”
“Oh, shit.” Jaejoong glanced at Yunho, “I forgot.” He bit his lip, “I should go. They won’t like it if I’m late –“
“I’m going to leave now.” Dojin spoke before he turned around to leave. Just as he was at the door, he faced them once more. “Yunho – we have another meeting later, so don’t forget.”
“I won’t.” Yunho muttered before the door shut behind Dojin.
Jaejoong eyed Yunho, “Is it…is it something important?” he asked, “Do you want me to go with you again?” he moved closer to Yunho and held the other man’s hands, “I could leave my family thing early and –“
Yunho shook his head and nuzzled Jaejoong’s neck, “Don’t worry about it.” He littered Jaejoong’s neck with soft kisses, “I’ll see you again in the evening, so you don’t have to go. Spend time with your family.”
“Yunho…”
The other man pulled away, and he threaded his fingers through Jaejoong’s hair, “I’ll be fine, okay?” he kissed Jaejoong once more, “Don’t worry about me so much. I can take care of you, and I can take care of myself.”
“I can do that too.” Jaejoong muttered as he felt himself leaning into Yunho’s gentle touches and caresses, “You can’t stop me from worrying…every time you’re away from me, I always…I always pray that something doesn’t happen to you.”
“Nothing will.” Yunho murmured as he pressed a soft kiss to Jaejoong’s forehead. He tilted Jaejoong’s chin up so that their eyes could meet, “I made a promise to you, didn’t I? I’ll keep it, so don’t worry.”
Jaejoong stared into Yunho’s eyes, and he forced a smile. “Okay.”
No matter how many fronts Yunho up for him, and no matter how many promises he and Yunho made, nothing could ease the worries that filled him whenever they parted. It was like his body just refused to be parted from Yunho ever again.
o-o-o
Luckily, he wasn’t late and the lunch had gone rather well.
His parents were distracted by their grandchildren, Sohyang was off with Taeyoung, Soojung was with her boyfriend, and Suyeon was resting in her room, which meant that he had enough time to call Yunho to make sure he was alright.
Jaejoong slipped out of the room his parents were in and made his way to the garden, where he was sure that he’d get some privacy. He smiled at the house help on his way there, and just as he was about to turn right to enter the garden, he heard someone call his name.
He turned around, and he was surprised to see Soojung’s boyfriend.
“Yes?” Jaejoong asked with a smile on his face. “Do you need help? Did you get lost or something –“
The older man shook his head and smiled, “Actually, I was hoping if I could talk to you in private. It’s a bit of an important matter you see…”
A look of worry flashed over Jaejoong’s features. “Is it about Soojung?” he asked.
“In a way, it is.” He replied, “Is there anywhere private where we can talk?”
Jaejoong nodded, “We can talk at the gazebo – there’s usually no one there.” He opened the doors that led to the garden and allowed the man to follow him outside to the gazebo which was only a short walk away.
As soon as they were under its cover, he turned around. “What do you need to talk to me about?”
“How’s Yunho?”
Jaejoong frowned and narrowed his eyes, “What are you –“
“I see you don’t know.” The older man smiled, “You see, that’s the good thing about being involved in a crime syndicate Jaejoong. There are multiple layers of insulation in order to ensure that the identities of important members are kept secret.”
Jaejoong stared at the man and things finally fell into place.
Kim Jaewook.
No wonder the name had been so familiar the moment he’d heard it come out of Dojin’s mouth. All along, he’d already known Kim Jaewook. He’d talked to him, he’d shared meals with him – he’d treated him like an equal.
Jaejoong took a step closer, “What the fuck are you doing with Soojung?” he hissed as he took hold of the man’s collar and pushed him up against the wall, “What do you want from her?”
Jaewook calmly pushed Jaejoong away and straightened his shirt, “Nothing.” He smiled at Jaejoong, “I like her. Am I not allowed to?” he asked before he tugged at Jaejoong’s turtleneck to reveal the dark bruises from the previous night’s activities. “You’re involved with Yunho.”
Jaejoong took a step back, “So you –“
“I genuinely like her.” Jaewook said plainly, although Jaejoong still didn’t trust his words. He smiled at Jaejoong, “Now let me talk to you about the real matter at hand.”
“Wait.”
A look of irritation flashed across Jaewook’s features before it slipped back underneath his mask of calm. “What is it?”
“Does…does Soojung know?” Jaejoong breathed out, “Does she know that you’re part of the syndicate? Does she…does she know I’m a part of it as well?”
Jaewook shook his head, “She doesn’t know…for now.” He crossed his arms and leaned against a post, “Now I want to talk to you about business. Have you made any progress on getting Yunho to agree with Kangshik?”
Jaejoong’s lips formed a hard line and he shook his head, “He doesn’t want to listen to what I have to say. He doesn’t think it’s a good idea –“
“Convince him to agree.” Jaewook drawled as he took a step closer to Jaejoong. His eyes were fixated on his, “It’ll be a good move for the syndicate, and it’ll help us get even greater leverage. It’ll expand our business capabilities and help us earn more.”
His eyes raked over Jaejoong’s body, and his lips curved into a smirk. “You’re his lover. I’m sure you’ll be able to think of some way to convince him…in some way that you’ll both enjoy.”
Jaejoong had to stifle his disgust, and he nodded slowly. Every single inch of him was disgusted by Jaewook’s words, but for the sake of the protection of his family, he would have to keep quiet.
“I’ll see to that.”
“Well then…” Jaewook smiled, “It was nice talking to you. Soojung’s waiting for me.” He finished, and it wasn’t long before they both heard Soojung’s distinct voice calling for Jaewook to go back to her.
“You should go.” Jaejoong pressed, “She’s calling you.”
“I will.” Jaewook turned around to leave, but just as he was at the last step, he faced Jaejoong once more. “Oh yes, don’t forget to remind Yunho about the meeting this evening. Everyone’s required to attend, so I’ll be sure to see you there too.”
“I’ll remind him.” Jaejoong answered softly.
“Okay – see you then.” Jaewook replied before he turned away and jogged up over to where Soojung was. He took her into her arms and kissed her on the lips, before he held her hand and led her away.
Jaejoong could feel his disgust as he watched them, but he was jerked out of his thoughts as soon as he felt a buzzing in his pocket. He was both unsurprised and glad to see the caller was Yunho, so he answered it immediately.
“Jaejoong, come back home immediately.” Yunho ordered, “I need you with me right now. It’s not good for you to be out at this moment.”
“Why?”
“Kangshik’s dead.” Yunho answered, “I’m worried there’s someone out there hunting down members of the syndicate, or if someone’s trying to start something. Please, find a way to leave early and get back home.”
“Okay.” Jaejoong rushed out of the gazebo, “What are we going to do now?” he asked as he tried to find his parents, “Do you have a plan?”
“Not as of now.” Yunho answered, “Please, come home.”
“I will.” Jaejoong promised, “I will.”
o-o-o
As soon as he opened the door, Jaejoong suddenly found himself in Yunho’s tight embrace. He buried his face into the taller man’s shoulder instinctively and clutched the other man even tighter.
“I have to tell you something.” Jaejoong whispered as pulled away from Yunho and met his eyes. “It’s important.”
“What is it?”
“Jaewook…he’s dating my sister.” Jaejoong blurted, “I just realized this morning when…when he told me to tell you to change your mind about the drugs. Yunho, he’s dating Soojung, and I don’t know what to do.”
Yunho stared hard at Jaejoong, “Does she know about you? Does she know that he’s part of the syndicate?”
Jaejoong shook his head, “No, she doesn’t know…but Yunho, he has her in his grasp. I don’t know what I can do. I don’t trust him.” He swallowed hard and bit his lip, “There has to be something going on, I’m sure of it.”
“Did he say anything else? Did he talk about anything aside from the drugs?”
“He told me that there was a meeting later – this evening.” Jaejoong looked up at Yunho questioningly, “What’s going to happen to the syndicate? You’re next in line, aren’t you? Is there still something to worry about?”
“As long as Jaewook’s alive, there’s something to worry about.” Yunho muttered as he averted his eyes momentarily. He held Jaejoong tightly, “You can’t just come in between him and your sister. He knows too much – he can ruin your family.”
Jaejoong swallowed hard, “Are you going to kill him?”
Yunho was silent for a few seconds before he replied. “If he strikes first, then I’ll strike back.” He brushed back Jaejoong’s hair, “This is the tipping point for our movement, and all our actions need to be well planned. This determines our fate.”
“I’ll stay with you,” Jaejoong murmured as he met Yunho’s gaze. “Until the end of everything. I won’t leave your side…I promise.”
o-o-o
Yunho pulled Jaejoong close to his side as they navigated through the corridors of the syndicate’s headquarters. Jaejoong felt his heart pound faster, and he clutched Yunho tightly as they made their way to the meeting room.
Yunho leaned down and whispered into Jaejoong’s ear, “Take note of every person wearing a particular shade of red in that room.” He murmured, “From that, you’ll be able to know who’s on our side or not. Try to memorize as many faces as possible.”
The doors were opened for them, and Jaejoong looked around the room quickly for people wearing red. He took notice of the men, and he noticed that Dojin was wearing a red shirt underneath his suit jacket.
“How did Kangshik die?” Jaejoong whispered as Yunho led him to a distant corner of the room, “How was he found?”
“He was shot in the head.” Yunho murmured, “They found his body slumped over his desk this morning, and none of his family survived either.”
“What about your company?” Jaejoong asked, “It was placed under his care, right? What has happened to that?”
“It’s back under my control now.” Yunho answered as Jaewook strolled into the room, a confident look on his face. He squeezed Jaejoong’s hand tightly, “Stay close to me at all times.”
All the men gathered, and Jaejoong watched as Yunho and Jaewook met each other at the center of the room. He moved to follow Yunho, but Dojin took hold of him by the wrist and led him over to sit on the sofa closest to the two.
“Let them talk.” Dojin muttered, “We’ll need to be able to move in case anything goes wrong here.”
Jaejoong fell silent, and so did everyone else in the room. Yunho and Jaewook stood in the center of the room, and they watched each other with equally cold eyes, both of them waiting for the other to strike.
Yunho started speaking first.
“You all know the matters to be taken care of. Kangshik is dead, and so I will replace him as his selected heir.” Yunho cast his gaze throughout the room, his intense gaze falling on each man. “This is how things have be done, and this is how –“
“Isn’t it time for change?” Jaewook questioned, “Do you all believe that Yunho is the right person to lead us into a new era?”
“Are you insulting my capabilities as a leader?” Yunho snarled, immediately turning to face Jaewook. “If you’re bitter about being shoved aside by Kangshik, now is not the time to burst with emotion. Control yourself!”
“Control?” Jaewook asked mockingly, “Of course, you are the king of self-control, aren’t you Yunho? For so long, you deny yourself but don’t try to hide the fact that you’re just as vicious as I am.” He snarled, “Don’t hide under your guise any longer.”
“Don’t group me with yourself.” Yunho argued, “I am nothing like you and Kangshik. I refuse to thrust our group into the mess of the narcotics industry, and I refuse to make rash decisions.”
“Can’t you see gentlemen?” Jaewook questioned as he turned his back to Yunho and looked around the room, “We have a traitor in our midst!” his eyes snapped to Yunho instantly, “Watch as he tries to keep us down. He pulls us down, and he prevents us from reaching new heights!”
“New heights?” Yunho fought back, “You’re insane Jaewook. I am no traitor.”
“If you’re against us, then you’re a traitor Yunho.” Jaewook insisted, a mask of calm on his face. “As far as I know, you and your father have been moving against Kangshik for years now. Kangshik killed your father for his treachery, and I think you should be punished too.”
“You sick bastard.” Yunho replied as he shook his head in disgust, “Do you want to lead us into ruin that badly? What do you want to gain from your foolish quest?”
“Foolish?” Jaewook laughed, “I am anything but foolish. I see greater heights, I see more power in our future!” he spread his arms out and called to the men, “Do you all wish to be bogged down by Yunho and his corrupted sense of morals?”
He turned his head to Yunho, “Don’t pretend like you’re a hero Yunho. You’re anything but that.” Jaewook drew his gun, “Are you man enough to end this? Are you strong enough to put me down?”
There was a sudden gunshot, and Yunho backed away from Jaewook. The room was immediately thrown into chaos, and Jaejoong watched as men broke off into different fractions.
“Of course he’s prepared.” Dojin hissed as he pulled Jaejoong off the sofa and pulled out his own gun. Men rushed into the room with their guns drawn, and Dojin pushed Jaejoong into a pathway.
Jaejoong ran through the darkness, and he turned back to see Dojin firing back at people who were following them. “What about Yunho?” he yelled, “What happened to Yunho?”
“Keep moving!” Dojin shouted back as he took hold of Jaejoong and pulled him further into the darkness, “He knows his way out!” he gripped Jaejoong tightly and kicked open a door which led them to an alleyway. Jaejoong followed the other man and they ran until they reached a car that was parked a few blocks away.
Dojin pulled the door open, and Jaejoong slid in after him. Changmin glanced back at them and instantly stepped on the gas as soon as they were both safely inside. He raced through the streets and spoke only after a few tense minutes had passed.
“He shot someone?” Changmin questioned.
“He didn’t fire anything.” Jaejoong replied, his hands shaking in his lap. “Someone else did. Jaewook didn’t start –“
Dojin shook his head, “It was planned. Without a doubt Jaewook convinced some poor fool to start some shit in order to create chaos. He needs everyone divided so that he can gather as many people to his side as possible.”
“Are they just going to follow him?” Jaejoong demanded. “Do you know who his allies are? We need to do something.”
“Right now, we need to gather.” Changmin insisted as he parked in front of a warehouse. “This is the location that Yunho has chosen as our safe house. We’ll be using this as our base until further notice.”
The three men left the car, and as soon as Jaejoong saw Yunho stand up from the worn down couch, he rushed to meet him but stopped as soon as they were a short distance away. He swallowed hard and stared at Yunho expectantly.
“What now?” he breathed out and repeated his question. “What now?”
“I have to leave.” Yunho replied. “There’s something that I must take care of.” He shook his head at Jaejoong, and Jaejoong watched Yunho helplessly.
“Please, you can’t leave me.” Jaejoong whispered. “Take me with you.”
“Jaejoong, follow me.” Yunho said softly. He held out his hand, and Jaejoong took it faithfully. He led Jaejoong into a farther room at the back of the safe house, and as soon as they were alone, he let go.
Jaejoong felt a chill at the loss of contact, and he watched Yunho in the dim lighting. He licked his lips anxiously and crossed his arms, “Why won’t you take me?” he whispered softly, “Don’t you trust me?”
Yunho was silent, “Do you remember Jaewook’s words?”
“I didn’t pay much to that madman.” Jaejoong insisted, “Don’t doubt me Yunho. I love you, and I’ve told you so many times that I would follow you until the end of everything. Please, don’t leave me behind.”
“I’m not leaving you.” Yunho took a step closer and held Jaejoong. “I told you that I wouldn’t.” he shook his head, “Please, have faith in me. I told you and I promised you that I’d always go back.”
“Take me with you –“
Yunho held Jaejoong tighter, “I’m keeping you safe.” He kissed Jaejoong softly and pulled away, leaving the latter to look at him longingly. “I’ll be back in less than two hours, and then I’ll bring you away from here.”
“To where?” Jaejoong asked softly.
“I’ll bring you to a place where we can be ourselves, if only for a while.” Yunho murmured. “Will you wait?”
“Of course.” Jaejoong whispered back, “I’ll always wait for you.”
Yunho held Jaejoong close and they kissed passionately, both looking and needing reassurance from the other. Jaejoong held Yunho tightly as they pulled away, and he made Yunho look into his eyes.
“Never once have I regretted loving you.” Jaejoong spoke slowly, his voice filled with conviction. “In my eyes, you’ll always be the Yunho that I’ve grown up with, the Yunho that I’ve loved for so many years in restraint. My other half, Yunho, I love you.”
Jaejoong didn’t know he’d been crying until Yunho began to kiss away his tears.
o-o-o
As soon as Yunho had come back, he’d asked Changmin to drive them to a different location. Jaejoong was silent the entire time, content to lean against Yunho and to play with the other man’s hands.
“Where are we going?” Jaejoong whispered.
“A shabby place to sleep in,” Yunho replied. “I would’ve liked to bring you somewhere else, but there’s nothing I can do right now. I’m sorry.”
Jaejoong kissed his cheek, “Don’t be.” He glanced out the car window, “Are we almost there Yunho?”
“Yeah, we are.” He replied. As soon as the car slowed down and parked, Yunho opened the car door and led Jaejoong to the rather worn down house. He glanced back at Jaejoong with an apologetic expression, “Not very romantic or safe looking, now is it?”
Jaejoong chuckled and just held Yunho’s hand tighter, “As long as we’ll be together, I’m okay.” He smiled up at him, “Just for tonight though, right?”
“Yeah.” Yunho replied softly as he unlocked the door of the house and kicked it open. They entered the house together, and Jaejoong glanced at the kitchen.
“Do you want me to prepare you something?” he asked.
Yunho shook his head, “No, I’m okay.” He glanced at the stairs, “Do you want to check out what’s upstairs for me? I’ll just scope out what’s here.”
Jaejoong nodded and walked upstairs. He looked around and inspected the bathrooms and the bedrooms. He entered the master bedroom and as soon as he was inside, he noticed a car parked outside.
He pressed his body against the window and watched as men filed out of the car. His heart pounded in his chest and he watched as Jaewook exited the car and was greeted by Changmin.
Jaejoong immediately ran out of the room, determined to find Yunho, but just as he had swung the door open, Yunho was there.
“Yunho, we have to leave! Jaewook’s here and –“
“I saw.” Yunho whispered softly. “I know.” He gripped Jaejoong tightly as the sound of a door being knocked on forcefully resounded throughout the tiny house. “Listen to me, stay here, okay?”
“What are you saying?” Jaejoong cried as he held onto Yunho tightly, “You told me that you wouldn’t leave me –“
“Be quiet, please.” Yunho pleaded desperately as he fought against Jaejoong and pushed the other man towards a closet. Jaejoong struggled, but Yunho was the stronger one, and it wasn’t long before Jaejoong was inside.
Jaejoong fought against him and struggled to prevent Yunho from shutting the closet doors on him, “Yunho please, don’t do this!”
“Be quiet Jaejoong!” Yunho demanded as he pushed Jaejoong back roughly, the latter’s back colliding against the end of the closet. “Please, be quiet.” He whispered, his tone softer. “Wait for them to leave before you come out.”
Jaejoong tried to move forward, but Yunho pushed him back, “Jaejoong, I love you. If I die here, live on for me, please.” He whispered before he shut the closet doors and blocked them, preventing Jaejoong from being able to open it without making a loud racket.
Jaejoong stifled his sobs, and he could hear Yunho moving furniture, then he heard the sound of a window being slid open. He grabbed a cloth and clutched it tightly, tears streaming from his eyes as he sat in the darkness.
The door to the bedroom was kicked open, and Jaejoong had to bite onto the cloth in order to prevent his sobs from being heard.
“You’ve made things easier for me.” Jaewook spoke, his voice sending shivers up Jaejoong’s spine. “For that, I have to thank you Yunho.” He could hear men shuffling around the room, and Jaejoong clutched onto the cloth even tighter.
“Get out.” Jaewook ordered, and Jaejoong could hear the men move out of the room.
“You found me.” Yunho said, his voice so soft that Jaejoong could barely hear it. “How would you like to kill me?”
“I’ll leave the pleasure of killing you to Changmin.” Jaewook replied, and Jaejoong could hear the sound of someone loading his gun. “What’s it like Yunho, to know that your best friend has been planning your demise all along?”
Yunho was silent, and Jaejoong tried even harder to stifle his sobs. He moved, trying to get closer to the closet doors so that he could try to hear, but he was too afraid that his movements would cause a racket.
“Where’s Jaejoong?” Jaewook questioned, “He’s your successor, isn’t he?”
Jaejoong heard footsteps, and it wasn’t long until Changmin spoke. “It seems like he’s somehow found some way to let Jaejoong escape. They must’ve seen us when we got here.”
“I see.” Jaewook chuckled, “Well, I’ll deal with Jaejoong – no doubt he’s at your safe house by now.”
There was a lull of silence until Jaewook cleared his throat. “Changmin, kill him then have his body thrown into a river. Make sure to keep something of his so that I can show it to Jaejoong later.”
Jaejoong heard footsteps near the closet, and his heart raced in his chest. He waited anxiously, but the footsteps stopped.
“I’m curious Yunho – what are you feeling right now?” Jaewook questioned, “What’s it like to be betrayed by someone close to you?” Jaewook let out a noise of irritation, “I had hoped you would be more talkative by now.”
Silence fell again.
“I’m sure you know that I killed Kangshik, right?” Jaewook spoke again, “He was more expressive than you are when he realized my betrayal. I would’ve expected more of a reaction from you Yunho…but then again, your amount of self-control is quite extraordinary.”
Jaewook chuckled, “Well, I’m off to kill your lover now. Do you have any kind of message for him? Do you have any parting words?”
Yunho was silent.
“Well then, I’ll leave Changmin to do what he’s best at – killing.”
The footsteps got softer as Jaewook left, and Jaejoong tried his best to stile his sobs as he heard Changmin cock the gun. His heart was being wrenched painfully in his chest, and he could feel the streams of tears flowing down his face.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.” Changmin spoke, “But I’m sorry things had to end like this.”
A gunshot sounded, and the inevitable thud of a body echoed after. Jaejoong couldn’t control himself, and he had to bite down hard onto the cloth as he did his best to stifle the sobs that wracked his body.
“Pick up the body.” Changmin ordered as men entered the room, “We’ll need to get rid of the body as soon as possible. I’m sure that Jaejoong has told the others about what has happened. We need to leave before reinforcements arrive.”
As soon as there were no more sounds in the room, Jaejoong forcefully kicked the door open and crashed out of the closet. He landed onto the floor, scrambled up and tried to look for evidence of Yunho’s death.
He didn’t have to look far - the evidence was a large crimson stain on the carpet.
Jaejoong fell to his knees, sobbing hard, and as he heard people enter the house, he could not be moved away until Dojin grabbed him and hauled him out of the house. He knew they were all looking to him for answers, for solutions, for something, but he had nothing to give them.
Yunho was dead and part of him had died with him.
